Dan Martin, our UK MD presented at Recruitment International's SME conference on 16th January, delivering an overview of what Big Data really is all about.

The concept of Big Data is a hot topic on the recruitment conference circuit at the moment, but what exactly is it and why is it important? Dan aimed to answer both of these questions with his humoured and rather alternative view of the BIG topic of the moment.

Setting the scene, Dan talked through just how much data we create day to day and how this compares to a few years ago: 90% of the world’s data has been created in the last 2 years! The vast amount of digital data created during 2012 would fill DVD stack reaching from the Earth to moon and back. And if you imagine that the entire works of William Shakespeare (in text form) represent about 5 MB of data, you could store about 1,000 copies of Shakespeare on a single DVD. Definite food for thought!

But what does this really mean? Dan explained that by knowing what data you have streaming in and out of your business, you are able to analyse and then direct your business accordingly. Ultimately, by paying attention to the Big Data you have at your fingertips, you can reduce your resourcing costs, as well as predict the trends of your business; your industry; and your consultants performance. The possibilities of using your data are enormous…
